I’m sitting here watching Hamilton with the closed captioning on. I’ll be honest, I didn’t really like it the first time I saw it, when Disney released it last summer. I actually had tickets to see it at the Kennedy Center in September, but, well…2020. I’d never listened to the soundtrack or anything before; the closest I’d come was watching Lin Manuel-Miranda on Drunk History. So when I watched it the first time, I had no idea what to expect, and the lyrics, which make up the entire show, were a bit difficult to follow.

I’m on my third watch now, and it’s truly a well-crafted show. I’ve certainly learned a lot more about Alexander Hamilton and the people around him. (Not just from the show; I’ve actually done some reading.) Hamilton was always my ex-husband’s favorite historical figure, but I never really knew why. That didn’t stop us from naming our son Alexander, though. Knowing now how much Hamilton did during the Revolutionary War and after, it makes me prouder to have made that choice.
